Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 .with EDIS
My Project car is a 1969 Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3. For thoe who are wondering which model this is,It's a W109 Chassis ,which in turn means 'Air suspension Long wheel base',Hence the SE'L'. The end numbers 6.3 mean it is a Six Point three Liter V8....To run one of these is to know what raw torque is and what "pitiful fuel consumption" means. The Engine was 'Ne plus Ultra' in 1964 when it was introduced in the W100 Mercedes,Known as the Grosse 600.There were only 2900 of those made and even less right hand drive 6.3's made( 790 ). While blessed with stupendous performance they also have a 1964 ignition.A Bosch twin point distributor.Think of a precision Mallory twin point. These have points plates which adjustable so you can alter the firing point infinitely..Shame about the points though. They use the same size as VW beetle and will only stay in tune for about 3000 miles. I was thinking of installing an ECU to run LPG injectors but the sheer cost of the injectors alone put me off so I decided to up grade the ignition instead. And that brings me to the EDIS concept.I had read some years ago on Mercedes Forum where it had been considered by some one,but nothing was ever done,so i decided I was sick of changing fouled plugs, adjusting distributors on a hot engine and generally having to put up with dodgy performance. The biggest problem I face is lack of room. The 36 tooth wheel has to live on the front of the crank pulley .This's because the diameter of the damper is almost 8 inches and it sits close up against the front of the engine. The Pulley itself carries 5 belts ( 2 for aircon,2 for power steer and air compressor and 1 alternator drive) so there was no room to machine a peice from the pulley and mount it there. Unfortunately by utilizing the pulley it means a rethink with the fan.An electric thermo controlled unit will be my only option. To mount the toothed wheel on the pulley involves a bit of "Heath Robinson " engineering.I needed to make a ring which would press into the pulley center and stick out to support the toothed wheel. The pick Up is mounted on a rod welded to the aircon support. I mounted the coils on the front of the left hand head where the stock ignition was before. ..So far i have only fired it up the once....Does the expression.." sound of tearing canvas" aptly describe the noise this thing made? .Normally a fairly revvy sort of engine up to 5500 RPM ( max ) ,this time i nearly had to beat it off with a Stick!!! .I haven't wired in the megajolt as yet so i need to fiddle about with starting retard as 10 BTDC is a bit much for these with lots of kick back and back firing until it runs.
